
On 15 August 1797, the Galerie d’Apollon was opened with an exhibition of drawings. The Cabinet du Roi consisted of seven rooms west of the Galerie d’Apollon on the higher ground of the transformed Petite Galerie. Many of the king’s work had been placed in these rooms in 1673, when it grew to become an art gallery, accessible to sure art lovers as a type of museum.
